Splitting Chestnut Rails

After tearing down the old log barn near Conner Road, I ended up with a lot of smaller logs that could not be cut into lumber.  I decided to try to split the logs into rails just as the early settlers did.  I was delighted to find that the Chestnut logs split right down the length of the log with little or no trouble.  Other than sweating out a gallon or so of water, it was fairly easy.  I now have a beautiful Vintage American Chestnut split rail fence in my front yard.
